The European Commission has described China’s provisional import tariffs on certain dairy products from the European Union as “unjustified and unnecessary.” The duties, ranging from 21.9 percent to 42.7 percent, are set to take effect on Tuesday.
China is currently investigating whether permanent tariffs should be imposed on selected EU cheese, milk and cream products. The probe is expected to conclude in February. According to Beijing, subsidies granted to the European dairy sector have harmed China’s domestic dairy industry.
A spokesperson for the European Commission said the Chinese investigation is based on “questionable allegations” and “insufficient evidence.” The Commission stressed that the EU would do everything necessary to protect its farmers and exporters, adding that Brussels will engage with Beijing to address the provisional tariffs.
