China denies demanding access to data after EU fines TikTok

China has denied that it requires companies to hand over data to authorities. The statement was issued over the weekend after TikTok received a substantial fine in the European Union on Friday for its handling of personal data.

TikTok was fined more than half a billion euros by the Irish Data Protection Commission for transferring data to China. Under EU regulations, tech companies may only send such information to countries outside the European Economic Area if the privacy protections there are equivalent to those within the bloc.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded by saying that the country “has never and will never require companies or individuals to illegally collect or store data.” It also urged Europe to “provide a fair, just, and non-discriminatory business environment for companies from all countries.”
