On April 3, the spokesperson of China Ministry of Commerce He Yadong stated that China and the European Union have agreed to resume negotiations on a price commitment regarding the anti-subsidy investigation into electric vehicles as soon as possible. This move aims to create a favourable environment for promoting investment and industrial cooperation between Chinese and European enterprises. Given the complexity of the case and at the request of the EU side, China has decided to lawfully extend the investigation period for the anti-dumping case on brandy.

The Ministry of Commerce held its regular press conference on the same day. During the briefing, He Yadong reported that on March 28, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao held talks with Maroš Šefčovič, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Trade and Economic Security, who was visiting China. The two sides held frank, in-depth, and pragmatic discussions on China-EU economic and trade relations and key issues of mutual concern, reaching a series of important consensuses.

Both parties acknowledged that the current international landscape is complex and ever-changing. China and the EU should uphold the independence and stability of bilateral economic and trade relations. Taking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU as an opportunity, both sides should enhance dialogue and communication, deepen practical cooperation, jointly safeguard the multilateral trading system and the security and stability of global industrial and supply chains, and inject greater certainty and positive momentum into the world economy.

He Yadong noted that the two sides conducted in-depth discussions on trade and investment matters and agreed to establish regular ministerial-level communication channels to strengthen exchanges on major bilateral economic and trade issues. Contact points have been designated, and both sides have instructed their respective working teams to regularly align on key issues and continuously promote progress, laying the groundwork for the next stage of high-level China-EU engagement.

During the talks, both sides also discussed the EU’s anti-subsidy probe into Chinese electric vehicles and China’s anti-dumping investigation into EU brandy exports. They reaffirmed their commitment to resolving trade disputes through dialogue and consultation in accordance with the important consensus reached by the leaders of China and the EU.

He added that the two parties also discussed issues such as the EU’s foreign subsidy investigations, regulatory cooperation on cosmetics, market access for agricultural and food products, and government procurement. Both sides reiterated their commitment to maintaining mutual market openness and providing a fair and competitive environment for business cooperation.
