Chinese Carmakers Outsell Renault and Audi in August as Europe’s PHEV Market Surges

More News | 2025-09-23

Market data show that Chinese automakers sold more cars in Europe than Renault and Audi in August, driven largely by strong demand for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). Chinese brands held about a 5.5% market share that month with over 43,500 sales, up roughly 121% year-on-year — surpassing Audi’s 41,300 and Renault’s 37,800.

PHEV sales across 28 European countries rose to nearly 84,000 units in August, up 59% year-on-year; PHEVs from Chinese manufacturers surged roughly fourteenfold to about 11,000 units. Models such as BYD’s Seal U, Chery’s Jaecoo J7 and SAIC’s MG HS ranked among Europe’s top-selling PHEVs. Tesla’s Model Y remained the best-selling battery-electric vehicle (BEV) but saw its August sales fall about 37% from a year earlier.

【Background】 Chinese automakers have accelerated exports of PHEV and hybrid models to Europe while planning local production to mitigate the effects of EU tariffs and other trade frictions; several firms have announced steps toward increasing local manufacturing capacity for the European market.

【Conclusion】 The rapid rise of Chinese brands in Europe’s PHEV segment is reshaping competitive dynamics and underscores the need for incumbents and new entrants to adapt strategies on pricing, product mix and localization. Businesses should closely monitor policy developments and market trends to navigate the evolving landscape.
